Improving livelihoods

One Acre Fund is an agricultural service provider that supports Africa's smallholder farmers to build resilient communities. The project aims to improve farmersā€˜ livelihoods by providing regular training, accessible input, and support for income diversification.

The program aims to

  • Improve coffee yields, diversify income streams, and increase profits of 34.000 coffee farmers.
  • Support farmers to adopt climate-smart practices to boost soil fertility and maintain yields during adverse weather.
  • Incentivize tree planting to create new financial and environmental assets
  • Increase farmer income with diversifying, seasonal crops

The expected overall outcomes are:

  • an increase in revenue of approximately 70 USD per participant is generated by coffee after two years
  • an average income increase of 90 USD per participant and year, for those who adopt income diverifying activities after 2 years
  • a total of approx. 2.45 million USD/year of added value in income after end of the project in 2027

Creating evidence

One Acre Fund and HereWeGrow aim to generate valuable insights through the project. The research firm Laterite will conduct the evaluation of the program, and investigate the casual effects of the project through a cluster-randomized control trail (cRCT).

The evaluation intends to address the following questions:

  • Causal Effects: What are the short- and medium-term effects on recommended agricultural practices, coffee and chia production, coffee prices, and income for participants?
  • Mechanisms of Change: How does the project achieve these changes and which components are most crucial for success?
  • Equity of Benefits: Will all household members benefit equally from the project's effects?
  • Negative Consequences: Does the project have any negative impacts on participants or target communities?
